Travel is a wonderful thing to do. I’ve learned so much from the 60 countries that I have had the opportunity to visit over the years. Almost every one of them were in some relationship to being in the Navy for 31+ years.
I’ve been asked many times, what is my favorite place? It’s hard to say because every place has something unique – good, and, sometimes bad. I love Prague, Czech Republic as a large capital city. I also love Ljubljana, Slovenia as a small capital city. They are not that far apart. Prague was fortunate not to incur war damage that Warsaw and Budapest did over the past 300 years.
I adore northern Italy as an area, especially compared to the south of Italy. Lots of history and great food abound everywhere. One of the worst experiences of my life happened one afternoon in Venice. I was thrown out of a restaurant because I ordered a glass of wine and didn’t order any food. There is a law against drinking only in a restaurant.
I prefer hot and humid to most any other type of weather. The night time temperatures in Manama, Bahrain were in the low-to-mid 100’s at 3 o’clock in the morning. Being an island nation, the humidity made me feel at home. However, I fell hook, line and sinker for Bora Bora, Tahiti.
My first flight to Tahiti was a military one in which we took a bunch of scientists to study the equatorial waters. We flew from Hawaii to Tahiti and dropped a bunch of bathythermograph sonobuoys to measure the surface and subsurface water temperatures down to a 1000 feet. I spent four nights there on my first visit. I liked it so much I had to take my wife there for honeymoon number four or five (can’t remember which) and we spent a couple of weeks at Club Med on Bora Bora and Moorea.
