A healthy heart extends your life.

Before I begin, I am not referring to those born with a health issue, nor am I referring to people accidentally injured. I am writing about people who control their own lives. They choose the foods they eat and the exercise schedule they adhere to.

The Law of Cause and Effect states that for every effect there is a definite cause. Our thoughts, behaviors, and actions manifest our current life. There are many things we are not taught in school. Health improvement and maintenance, financial planning, etc. are a couple of them.

We hear about the Atkin’s Diet, the Paleolithic diet, Gluten-free diet, the DASH diet, the Mediterranean diet, the Ketogenic diet, the Weight Watchers diet, the Zone diet, the South Beach diet, the raw food diet, and more.

We also hear about people who are vegans or vegetarians. Some vegetarians exclude dairy, some don’t. But both groups avoid meat, poultry, and seafood. Are vegans and vegetarians healthier than the rest of us? There is evidence on both sides. Who is correct?

To be healthy, we must have over thirty nutrients daily to minimize risk of disease. Therefore, vegans and vegetarians must know a lot about the nutrient values of the foods they choose to eat. It is so easy to be deficient in calcium, iron, vitamin B-12, various amino acids found in meats, and more.

The bottom line is that we don’t know what is contained in the foods we eat. We don’t know what is required to achieve and maintain great health. Our health changes incrementally. Day after day, we see no change to our health, other than the occasional cold/flu.

We think we are eating healthy enough because we don’t see any dire consequences to our eating. The same can be said about regular exercise and daily stress management. There is a lot of data swirling around us. Reach out and find it. Our daily food choices must be balanced across the board for the nutrients we need today and, in the future, (think 40-50 years down the road).

Is not knowing or not choosing to know an accident?
