Checklists are created so that nothing critical is missed when performing an operation. A checklist is used for aircraft safety, clinical practice, civil litigation, public liability, professional diving and more. However, when was the last time you saw a checklist for living? Or, more specifically, eating?

What if there was a checklist for eating. There are 30 key nutrients the body needs daily. Some are easy to attain and others are not. The biggest problem is that very few people know what is required. Thus, most people don’t know when they are eating a nutritionally balanced regimen daily.

Statistics till us that most Americans are deficient in the following vitamins (A, B, C, D, E and K) and minerals (magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper and calcium). Common illnesses from nutrient deficiencies are osteoporosis, depression, night blindness and anemia. Deficiency of vitamin B-12 mimics Alzheimer’s disease. This is a very short list of maladies associated with various nutrient deficiencies.

If a checklist could normalize your eating to include the minimum daily requirement of all needed nutrients, you would still be below the healthy range. The Recommended Daily Intake established by the Food and Drug Administration is on the low side in many cases. For example, they recommend 600 IUs of vitamin D. That amount is not sufficient for good health.

The 25-hydroxyvitamin-D blood test should reflect at least 50 ng/mL, and 80 ng/mL if fighting a serious disease. The FDA’s recommendation of 600 IUs of vitamin D3 barely reaches their recommended value of 20 ng/mL. Vitamin D3 can be achieved through exposure to sunlight. This varies by surface area, angle of the sun and skin pigmentation. Or, it can be obtained through supplementation.

If you had a checklist of foods to eat that corresponded with the nutrients needed, then deficiencies would become evident on a review of each day’s checklist. If after three or four days in a row without sufficient vitamin E or K2, for instance, a concentrated effort should be made to increase those nutrients in the next day’s meals. Note, vitamin E is made up of eight different chemicals – no one food contains all eight.

The intent of this checklist is to ensure you eat properly. Eating a balanced nutritional regimen of foods daily ensures a good baseline of health and minimal risk of disease resulting from vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

As reflected in Alice in Wonderland, if you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there. However, with your health, any diet without nutritional balance will guarantee an increased risk of future disease.
