Our bodies make Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). It is needed in every cell in our bodies. It gives the mitochondria in our cells the ability to produce energy (ATP) our bodies need to function. Aging causes a decline in our ability to make CoQ10. Supplementation of CoQ10 can counter the aging processes and many degenerative diseases.

CoQ10 is commonly called ubiquinol. Our bodies convert the supplement, ubiquinone, to ubiquinol. The conversion rate is not high. Several years ago, manufacturing processes were finally able to produce ubiquinol as a supplement. It costs three times as much as ubiquinone (on the average) but is worth it because you get more CoQ10 into your body.

Unfortunately, cholesterol drugs shut down our body’s production of CoQ10. Pharmaceutical companies know this. One even patented CoQ10 to be included in their cholesterol medicine, but never manufactured it. Cholesterol is not a great measure of cardiovascular risk. Homocysteine is a much better marker of heart disease.

Mitochondria produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Our health depends on the amount of ATP our cells generate daily. Ninety-five percent of all bodily functions depend on this energy source. Reduce the amount of ATP and your body begins to decay and age. CoQ10 supplementation also reduces the risk of cardiac disease by more than fifty percent.

An animal study supplemented CoQ10 testing its effect on longevity. There was an 11.7% increase in average life. Our lifespan is calculated to be 78.8 years. This would translate to an increase in nine additional years.

Shilajit is an ancient Ayurvedic medicine. It has been used to restore energy, improve fertility, memory, and immunity. Shilajit protects mitochondria by its ability to adapt to both internal and external stresses at the cellular level. Recent studies have tested the combination of CoQ10 and shilajit.

CoQ10 donates its own electrons to counter free radical damage due to inflammation. Once used, CoQ10 must be replaced. Shilajit provides electrons to the CoQ10 molecule so that it can remain active. It is a truly synergistic effect where the final combination is greater than the sum of the individual components.

If you are on a cholesterol medicine, you need to discuss CoQ10 supplementation with your physician. If you are over forty years of age, your body is not making CoQ10 in the same quantities as it used to earlier in your life. Shilajit combined with CoQ10 yields a synergistic approach to countering aging and age-related diseases.
