Human growth hormone (HGH) is responsible for controlling our growth and longevity. We make less every year as we age. Fasting is the easiest way to increase HGH. The longer the fast, the more HGH is produced. One action to improve your longevity and reduce the risk of age-related diseases is to fast. Anything over twelve hours a day is good for you.

Our blood sugar levels rise in response to the carbohydrates and sugars we eat. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas to control glucose levels. If glucose levels are left high for long periods of time, your health can be in jeopardy. The second action to take is to reduce sugar intake.

Blood vessel damage, organ damage, increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, weight change, nerve problems can develop. In extreme cases, death is a possibility.

Glucose is stored as glycogen and used to fuel our bodies. Excess glucose is converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. In an ideal world, we would eat enough carbohydrates to supply glycogen to our muscles and it would run out as we were eating our next meal. There would be no excess glucose to store as fat.

What happens when you don’t eat a lot of carbohydrates? Low blood sugar levels stimulate the hypothalamus to produce and release hormones that increase HGH. Low blood sugar levels prompt the liver to produce IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor). IGF-1 is a hormone-like insulin in structure, but not function.

Insulin is responsible for moving glucose into and out of cells. IGF-1 supports cellular division and growth. It also plays a role in cell repair. Children are more at risk for low levels of IGF-1 since it is required for growth. IGF-1 modulates the release of glucose to the cells from the liver and facilitates the growth of new muscle.

IGF-1 levels increase with all exercise, especially high-intensity exercise, quality sleep, fasting, reduced sugar consumption, and low body fat. Late-night snacking should be avoided also.
Insulin, HGH, and IGF-1 work together to control the body’s carbohydrate metabolism. If you want to live a longer, healthier life, fast daily and cut back on the carbohydrates and sugars.
