Lots of research is ongoing on many diseases. It takes time!

I will be speaking this week on the causes of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and our options. An option is a big word when discussing health. From a medical perspective, options are only those approved drugs identified for a specific disease. Natural options are not considered because they have not undergone rigorous clinical trials to test efficacy and safety.

However, foods (natural options) cannot be clinically tested because they are food – not something that can have a patent. Many drug patents come from natural sources – senna leaf and the bark of Cinchona are two of hundreds of examples.

Just twenty years ago, over ten percent of approved drugs (252 of them) were considered essential by the WHO came from flowering plants. In the past thirty years, around 50% of the approved cancer drugs came from natural products. Unfortunately, natural products cannot be prescribed by your doctor to treat your health or medical condition.

However, many natural options can be used to help prevent or treat diseases. We know that over 99% of all illnesses start as chronic, low-level cellular inflammation. Treat this cellular inflammation and disease has a difficult or no starting point to progress into a full-blown disease. What treats low-level cellular inflammation? Anti-inflammatory foods – berries, fatty fish, cruciferous vegetables, avocadoes, green tea, peppers, mushrooms, and more.

Imagine your doctor prescribing a plate of salmon, mushroom, kale, spinach, and bell peppers along with a glass of green tea! Ironically, that type of meal will provide the anti-inflammatory molecules to control inflammation at the cellular level in the body. Of course, you should still exercise, manage stress, avoid toxins, and do a few more things, but every little bit helps.

What About Alzheimer’s Disease?

Monoclonal antibodies are being investigated to prevent, treat, and remove amyloid-beta clumping (plaques). The monoclonal antibody lecanemab is in phase 3 clinical trials. Donanemab is in phase 2 now. In addition, some drugs possibly work better on early-onset AD, such as solanezumab.

Laboratory animals induced with Alzheimer’s were treated with a cancer drug, saracatinib, and successfully reversed memory loss. Experiments are ongoing to determine the efficacy of inhibiting the two enzymes responsible for producing the amyloid-beta protein – beta-secretase and gamma-secretase.

The tau proteins develop tangles and are commonly seen in AD patients. The drug sargramostim is being evaluated as a tau aggregation inhibitor.

Heart health and brain health are closely interrelated. Things that damage your heart – high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, etc. can increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Clinical trials are evaluating the effectiveness of hypertension drugs to treat AD patients.

Conclusion

The medical field must have clinical evidence showing that a new drug can effectively treat a disease without serious side effects. All prescription drugs have side effects. It is a matter of determining the dosage amount and frequency to minimize any other serious health issues.

However, natural options that prevent or treat inflammation and oxidative stress start early in the disease development phases and should delay or thwart further development. We do not wake up one day with a golf ball-sized tumor. It takes years for a mutated cell to grow to that size.

Even if we knew exactly where to look, we could not find cellular mutations with any accuracy to identify and treat. As a tumor grows, we might identify and treat it early, but there are usually no indications that there is a tumor. When something else points to it being there, or symptoms develop as the tumor matures, doctors can positively diagnose and treat it. Sometimes, it is too late.

Our health is our responsibility. Treat and destroy the inflammatory cycle early and often.
