John Allen Mollenhauer, Founder and CEO of Performance Lifestyle Coaching Center, is in his sixth day of a medically supervised water-only fast. I watched and listened to his most recent FB Live video a very short while ago.

He is absolutely correct in his approach to living. Eat when you are hungry. Eat nutrient dense foods. Restrict your calories to 1200-1600 calories per day. Fast periodically – even intermittent fasts daily are great. It’s interesting how our lifestyle philosophies we are similar.  We both want to educate and help people make lifestyle choices to improve their current and future health.

There is not, as he said a few moments ago, a one-trick pony (he named it Misguided) to make us healthy today, and keep us that way into our later years. We need awareness, education and action. Some of us need a friendly hand – a coach or mentor to get us going in the right direction.

Some of us need an accountability partner. The vast American public is ignorant of what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. There are too many competing interests in the marketplace. The lady following me in line at the grocery store yesterday placed nine boxes of cereal on the conveyor belt. I commented – “Doesn’t look like enough?” She laughed and said she had a large family. I asked how many and she said, four kids.

What interests in the marketplace were driving her decision to buy that many boxes of cereal. The marketplace tells us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eastern philosophy tells us that breakfast is not important – eat it if you wish. There is a big disconnect between the way the East and West think about food.

John tells us to eat only when we are hungry. Many times we eat out of habit, or because we are thirsty. It’s hard sometimes to tell the difference. In the morning, drink first, then determine how hungry you are. Water can slate a lot of problems. John has been living on nothing but water for the past six days and is seriously thinking about extending it to ten days.  He feels great – and, you can see it in his face and hear it in his voice.

Fasting is good for you. If you have any medical issues, or taking prescription medicines, or have not seen a doctor in a while, please consult one before attempting anything like this yourself.
