We identify dates uniquely – day, month and year. We think that when 2017 officially arrives that it is a new year. In truth, it is. But, in fact, it is just another day. Chances are you will do just what you did the day before and the day before that.

We typically don’t make changes cold turkey. There are some success stories among us, but it is not the norm. We rarely make changes incrementally, although those are much easier. Change happens not as often as we think.

Let’s say you have made your New Year’s Resolution to go to the gym three days a week. You might not be going at all right now. Yet, you want to begin a new phase of your life – to get fitter and healthier. You might have a nice gym in your neighborhood and the price is not a concern. You join and a month later you find that you are not averaging three times a week. A month later you are not going at all. What happened?

It’s not that you don’t want to change. It’s not that you don’t need to change. Your subconscious mind is preventing you from change. You have failed at it before (exercising) and the prime controller of your life is not going to allow you to fail again. It will prevent you from starting and maintaining an exercise program.

There are various ways to overcome the resistance your subconscious mind has to exercise; and, any other goal that you have failed at in the past. It’s not something that can be written in 25 words or less, but you can begin by changing the words you say to yourself. Instead of, “I need this”; or, “I want this.” Say, “I intend to do this”; or, “I expect to do that.” Want and need are not words understood by your subconscious mind. Intend and expect are understood.
