Taurine is an amino acid. It is one of many amino acids used in our bodies for creating proteins. Taurine is found in your brain, retina, heart, and platelets. Taurine is naturally found in meat and fish. Taurine is prescribed by some doctors to treat:

● Congestive heart failure
● High blood pressure
● Liver disease
● High cholesterol
● Cystic fibrosis

It is also used to treat:

● Epilepsy
● Autism
● Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHA)
● Eye problems of the retina
● Diabetes
● Alcoholism

In recent studies, taurine has been shown to activate brain stem cells that have been in the ‘sleep mode’. Taurine has generated new brain cells in the hippocampus of animals. The hippocampus is where most of our memory resides. The brains of people with Parkinson’s disease have low levels of taurine. An increase in total brain cells was observed in laboratory testing with human brain cells cultured with taurine.

Taurine decreases with age. Health can suffer since it is found is many critical organs in the body. Further studies revealed that taurine actually enriches neurites in your brain. Neurites are small projections (axons and dendrites) from brain cells. They are the mechanism that facilitates communication between cells.

Over time, our neurites become damaged by stress and toxins. This results in slower cognition. Taurine has been shown to restore normal neurite function in those neurites that had been damaged. As a result, brain cells were rejuvenated to be more functional in cognition, memory, feeling and thinking.

Taurine has been used to treat Parkinson’s disease and depression. Some Parkinson’s patients have been given the drug, levodopa. This drug causes a reduction in taurine levels in your brain.

Additional human studies have revealed that taurine levels in the body affect factors other than brain cells. For example, comparing taurine levels in people, those with much lower levels of taurine showed:

● 184 percent increase in risk of obesity
● 22 percent increase in risk of hypertension
● 120 percent increase in the risk of higher cholesterol

Taurine is one potential way to counter the effects of slow memory loss with age. It might even be a major factor to ward off Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Taurine protects the brain. When the taurine levels fall with age, this protection is minimized and our memories and thinking ability decrease. Taurine is found in meat and fish. Taurine supplements are very inexpensive.
