The big news today was that Pfizer announced that its COVID-19 vaccine is 90% effective. Is this 90% of all vaccinated do not get COVID-19? Does this include those with pre-existing conditions?

Half of the group were given a placebo and the other half were vaccinated. The vaccine uses messenger RNA in different combinations to targeted antigens, with the goal of producing antibodies.
Ninety-four people were confirmed with coronavirus seven days after the second dose was administered. Pfizer did not state how the test participants were infected or exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Additionally, it stated that half the vaccinated and half the placebo participants became infected.
Ninety percent is the number that Pfizer scientists claim as the results of this phase of testing. Twenty-eight days have elapsed since this phase of testing started. This is significant because the protection level acquired by the vaccine meets the test parameters established at the beginning of the clinical trial.
Professor Azra Ghani, Chair in Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Imperial College London, said: “What the 90% efficacy means is that the number of symptomatic cases of COVID-19 per 1000 participants over a period of 7 days following the second vaccine dose is 90% lower in those that received the vaccine compared to those that received the placebo.”

Conclusion
The study results are impressive. However, even with 90% effectiveness, does that mean that 75-year-olds will see the same 90% effectiveness rate? What are the side effects?
A question that popped into my mind was why all the placebo test participants did not become infected. A vaccine is to protect against the transmission of a disease from one person to another. Is it possible that the placebo used is as potent a vaccine as the vaccine itself?
I think there is a need for more data to be forthcoming to answer questions that are pending the minds of experts. Maybe this is great news, and I hope it is. However, partial release of data is suspicious. Maybe it is proprietary, and the public will find out down the road.

My interpretation of the above study is as follows: The 43K participants were divided into two groups, a Control group and a Study group (21.5K in each group). Nothing was done with the 21.5K Control group, other than observing them. Of the 21.5K in the Study group; 10.75K were given the vaccine and 10.75K were given a placebo. The Study group (vaccine and placebo) were then exposed to Covid-19. Those vaccinated in the Study group had 90% fewer people become sick with Covid than those given a placebo in the Study group. —— The following statement from the above study is somewhat confusing: “Additionally, it stated that half the vaccinated and half the placebo participants became infected.” Instead of ‘became infected’ substitute ‘were exposed to Covid-19’.
