Salmon – great food option and it provides many health benefits – maybe even fighting cancers.

Cancer permeates our lives. It seems if we live long enough, we will probably get some form of cancer. Researchers have been investigating dietary interventions to fight cancer – nutrients that restrict cancer cells from having a long and prosperous life – that is, until the host dies. Recent research looks exceptionally good with omega-3 fatty acids.

Fish Oil

https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-fish-oil/art-20364810. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to our lives. We do not make them. We must get them from the foods we eat or from supplements. Omega-3 fatty acid contains two omega-3s called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These omega-3s are found in salmon, mackerel, trout, oysters, crabs, and mussels. Another omega-3 is called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and is found in some nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.

Omega-3 fatty acid health benefits include heart disease, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Recent studies point to the anti-tumor benefit of omega-3 fatty acid in lab animals and potentially for humans. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1550413121002333?via%3Dihub

Ketogenic diets and caloric restriction protocols have shown progress in treating cancers. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0115147 Researchers know that an acidic microenvironment in tumors converts the energy sources for the cancer cell from glucose to lipids. When this is achieved, cancer cells thrive, multiply, and spread through the organ and other parts of the body.

Fatty acids affect tumor cells differently. Some fatty acids stimulate cancer cell growth, and other fatty acids kill the cancer cell. When omega-3 fatty acids enter the tumor cell, ferroptosis occurs – the tumor cell dies. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41419-020-2298-2

Conclusion

Laboratory animals fed a highly enriched diet of omega-3 fatty acids were injected with cancer cells. These tumor cells could not grow naturally compared to animals injected with cancer cells and not fed a diet of omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids stopped the progress of tumor growth in animals with cancer and inhibited the growth of cancer cells in animals fed a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Increasing the levels of omega-3 correlated with a higher kill rate of cancer cells.

Human studies have not been performed. The levels of omega-3 fatty acids given to laboratory animals need to be assessed for human consumption and safety. Do not increase your omega-3 fatty acid intake without consulting your physician if you have cancer.

This is a perfect example of a nutrient option from foods that can provide health benefits.

  1. Hi there! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization? I’m trying to get my website to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very
good success. If you know of any please share.
