What works and what doesn’t for a cold or the flu?

The cold and flu season is almost upon us. Your immune system is your most powerful defense against bacteria and viruses. A 72-hour fast will reset your immune system. In conjunction with a prolonged fast, you might consider these six options within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of cold or flu symptoms.

Sore throat, fever, cough, headache, congestion and sneezing are common symptoms for both a cold or the flu. The severity of the symptoms is usually associated with the flu rather than a cold. If you have major muscle soreness or body aches, you probably have the flu instead of a cold.

1 – High-Allicin Garlic

Nine grams of high-allicin garlic taken a couple of times a day saturates your body with sulfur. Garlic has been shown in many studies to effectively combat viruses. Be wary though of this high amount of high-allicin garlic. On an empty stomach you might have some severe problems. Eat before and after taking the high-allicin garlic. Also, be aware of the sulfur odor your body might emit. It’s a clue that it is working.

2 – DHEA

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a naturally occurring steroid hormone in the body. It can also be taken as a supplement. DHEA enhances your immune system. This is particularly effective in priming your immune system to respond to viral infections. 200 mg taken in the morning is recommended.

3 – Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin’s primary responsibility is the regulation and distribution of iron in the body. It also prevents damage in the body associated with aging. But, more importantly, it is an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agent. Lactoferrin promotes healthy bacterial growth in the gut which improves the immune system. 1200 mg is the advised.

4 – Zinc Acetate

Zinc has been shown in several studies to inhibit cold viruses. Two 18.5 mg zinc acetate lozenges taken every couple of hours at the onset of symptoms is usually enough to be effective at stopping the progression of cold symptoms. Be especially aware that zinc levels this high can be harmful to your health if taken for more than two days.

5 – Melatonin

Most people take one to three milligrams of melatonin to assist with their sleep. Ten to fifty milligrams of melatonin intensifies the immune system response to infections. Like the lower dosages of melatonin, these higher levels will invite deep sleep. Take only before bedtime. Do not operate any equipment. One major side effect is a feeling of being extremely tired. It is best taken when going to bed for the evening.

6 – Aged Garlic Extract

Aged garlic affects your immune system differently than high-allicin garlic. The natural killer cells are produced at a higher rate in the presence of aged garlic. Cold symptoms might not be eliminated with aged garlic extract alone, but the severity and duration will be reduced. 3,600 mg of aged garlic extract a day is supported by studies.
