Our immune system protects us.

The immune system is what defends us against disease. The word ‘system’ is key. It requires balance and harmony. Eighty percent of your immune system is located in your gut (your gastro-intestinal tract). The digestive system sees everything we eat and drink. It is exposed to toxins, stress and other factors every minute of every day. Wouldn’t you want your immune system cranking out as much protection as possible for you as you get older?

I am sure we have all seen elderly people (my parents included) go through a series of illnesses. Each time they recover, they are weaker than before the disease/illness started. Their immune systems were challenged. They never had a chance to catch up to their previous level of health, before another medical ailment took control. Under normal conditions, their bodies might have fought and solved their medical problem(s), but, with a weakened immune system they stayed continually at risk.

The immune system fights disease, infection and other unknown visitors in the body (fungi, bacteria, parasites and viruses). Your immune system can identify and take immediate action to counter the invading enemy when it is working properly. A depressed or weakened immune system can’t recognize, nor take appropriate action in a timely manner. There are situations in which the immune system recognizes friendly forces as the enemy and attacks them in error. It is autoimmunity.

Your lifestyle and other factors impact your immune system – positively and negatively. Some of those factors are:

● Age
● Gender
● Smoking habits
● Exercise
● Quality of sleep
● Level of stress
● Health history
● Immunizations
● Alcohol use
● Diet
● Early life experiences
● Toxin exposure

Your immune system needs to be replenished and rested on a regular basis to perform at its optimal capacity.
