Health blood vessels carry oxygen to every cell in our bodies.

Some of us hear the term nitric oxide and we think of the laughing gas that dentists use to calm their patients. Nitric oxide (formula NO) is not what the dentist uses. It is nitrous oxide (formula N2O).

I have had the nitrous oxide ‘laughing gas’ and did not laugh nor calm down. My early life experiences with dentists were not pleasant and remain in my psyche to this day. https://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/n/nitrous-oxide

Nitric Oxide and COVID-19

Years ago, nitric oxide was tested against the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus, SARS-Co-V, and was successful in suppressing the growth of the SARS virus. The results of that 2005 study are published in Redox Biology. Nitric oxide has been shown to be effective in treating herpes virus, coxsackievirus, and hantavirus. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/covid-19-nitric-oxide-shows-promise-as-antiviral-treatment

Nitric oxide works by opening or dilating the blood vessels to allow more blood flow and oxygen to the body. Inhalation is a method being evaluated now for COVID-19 animal studies. Inhibition of the SARS-Co-V-2 virus is seen in these studies.

Nitric Oxide Inhalation Therapy

Inhalation therapy using nitric oxide has been used since the early ‘90s to treat acute respiratory failure and pulmonary hypertension. It is not new. It is new as a treatment for COVID-19.
Nitric oxide is a natural chemical in our bodies. Nearly every cell in our body produces nitric oxide. It is critical for a healthy blood vessel system. When our bodies are working properly, nitric oxide increases blood flow, increases oxygen to the body, and relaxes the inner muscles to lower blood pressure. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00134-005-2675-4

Conclusion

COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms have difficulty breathing. Getting sufficient oxygen to the lungs is critical for survival. Nitric oxide is potentially a savior for seriously ill patients with acute respiratory failure.

Discussions are ongoing to begin human clinical trials using nitric oxide as a treatment for patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19.
