Green and black tea help relax the wall muscles of blood vessels.

There have been many studies and articles about tea and its health benefits. Here is a new one I came across today.

Blood Pressure Improvement

https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=253148 The most recent edition of the journal Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry published new insights into how tea lowers blood pressure. (https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210308/Compounds-in-green-and-black-tea-relax-blood-vessels-by-activating-ion-channel-proteins.aspx)

Catechins, specifically epicatechin gallate and epigallocatechin-3-gallate, activate the ion channel protein, KCNQ5 (https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology/kcnq5), in the smooth muscle walls of blood vessels. When activated, the walls become relaxed and allow more blood flow, hence reducing blood pressure.

This research was done at the University of California, Irvine. KCNQ5 is activated at 35 degrees Celsius. Does this mean that the unsweetened iced tea I drink daily is not helping my heart? No, because whether you drink hot tea or iced tea, the internal body temperature will shortly accommodate the tea’s external temperature to the body’s internal temperature of 37 degrees Celsius.

One noteworthy item is that milk appears to block the activation of this specific ion channel protein. It is speculated that the various chemicals will be separated into molecular components inside the body, and people drinking milk with their tea should gain the same heart-healthy benefit.

Conclusion

KCNQ5 has been isolated and studied for over twenty years. This ion channel protein is expressed differently within the body (brain vs. skeletal muscle). The recent discovery of smooth muscle relaxation inside heart blood vessels can lead to new treatments for hypertension. People who cannot take a baby aspirin might tolerate black or green tea to achieve similar results. Time will tell.
