Otto Warburg earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry and another in Medicine. He also was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931 for showing that cancer cells thrive in an anaerobic and acidic conditions. pH is potential hydrogen. It is a measure of acidity and alkalinity. Our blood pH is in the range of 7.35 to 7.45. 7.00 is considered neutral. Anything below 7.0 is considered acidic and anything above 7.0 is considered alkaline.

Foods, drugs, stress, medications, normal metabolic functions (breathing, etc.) and toxic chemical tend to lower the pH of your body. When your body’s pH drops below 6.4, enzymes are deactivated and normal digestive processes work less efficiently. Acidic conditions (acidosis) in the body decrease our overall energy levels, disrupt the body’s ability to repair itself, impairs our immune system, and makes us more susceptible to fatigue and illness.

I lived in acidosis for six years while I was following the Atkins Diet. I was unaware of what was happening while I lived in that acidic condition. I became very aware when I was diagnosed with osteopenia (reduced bone mass). The Atkins Diet, in an of itself, is not the cause of acidosis but can be if you make the wrong food choices. Even today, the books I have read on the Atkins Diet does not address acidosis.

Our body’s pH affects our health greatly. Our body will do almost anything it can to maintain a proper blood pH. It will steal calcium from our bones and minerals from other places in our body to maintain blood pH within the normal range. This is what happened to me. Even though I was a runner and weight lifter for many decades, it did not make my bones stronger – as I believed it would have.

Scientists have proven that viruses, bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, candida and cancer cells cannot survive an alkaline body. However, today we see a great increase in many diseases, cancer being at nearly the top of the list. In the early 1960’s, cancer rates were one in two hundred. Today they are well less than one in ten. Our immune system is our first line of defense against disease. An alkaline body protects our immune system. An acidic body compromises it.

We all have cancer seeds circulating in our bodies. Our immune system keeps them at bay. Fruits (especially berries and citrus) and vegetables increase the alkalinity of the body. Carbohydrates, dairy, protein and fats increase acidity. pH is easy to measure. I do it twice daily – in the morning upon awakening and at night before going to bed. I use pH strips to test my saliva. They can be bought at stores like Whole Foods.
