Travel is opening up a little bit at a time.

Travel has fascinated me as far back as I can remember. I think it was the 1961 song by Ricky Nelson, Travelin’ Man, that set the hook. I have been to 61 countries in the world, mostly thanks to the United States Navy.

In the year of the Pandemic, travel is restricted. Expect to be quarantined for up to 14 days in many places unless you have negative tests COVID-19 results in hand when you land.

Travel Restrictions

https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-travel-restrictions.html This link is valid as of five days ago and covers many countries in the world and what is allowed and not allowed. Albania has no travel restrictions for Americans – no COVID-19 test nor quarantine.

Costa Rica has no restriction regarding negative test or quarantine; however, they require medical insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment. An American traveling to Kenya from Louisiana or Oklahoma must have a negative COVID-19 test, but if you are from Texas, you will probably be quarantined for 14 days.

Returning flights to the United States for Americans also have travel restrictions regarding coronavirus.

United Kingdom

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-55052381 Beginning in the middle of December, travelers arriving in the United Kingdom can reduce the 14-day quarantine by being having a negative COVID-19 test done by a private facility – that costs around £100.

The test must be done after five days and the results are available in about 24 hours. When the traveler tests positive, the remaining time in quarantine is required. If the test is negative, the traveler is free to complete his or her travel goals.

The United Kingdom is trying options to make international business easier. Scotland and Northern Ireland are considering similar travel options. With the Christmas season upon us, airlines are hurting as well as many travel-related industries.

England’s Regional Restrictions

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-55048990 Yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a three-tiered system that becomes effective on December 2, 2020, when the current lock-down ends. The link goes into details of the Medium, High, and Very High. These tiers apply to work, home activities, sporting events, and more.

Conclusion

Airlines and countries are expecting restrictions to be lightened when vaccines are available. High-risk occupations, first responders, and at-risk patients will be at the head of the line for vaccines. When will the normal American get a vaccination? Maybe not for a couple of months at least.

Assuming a family of four travels to London in two weeks, currently, they need to spend nearly a week in quarantine, plus the cost of private COVID-19 tests. The cost of lodging and testing while quarantined can run over £1000 before you can do anything.

It is a start. Vaccines and other modalities will open doors and lower restrictions during the first six months of 2021. However, my belief is that COVID-19 will be with us longer than we think is reasonable.
