Health care is not insurance

Health insurance is insurance, not health care. Insurance covers specific criteria. It pays an agreed upon amount when certain conditions are met. Health care is the industry to supports your health. It includes health insurance. And, more importantly, it includes your lifestyle choices. I don’t believe health care is a right. You are the sole person in control of your health. The resulting cost of maintaining health care may involve insurance payments.

There is a lot of emotion attached to term, “coverage”. Does my plan cover this contingency? And, how much? Does it cover any pre-existing conditions? What do I have to pay? Those are questions that arise when evaluating insurance options. All health insurance is not created equal. Health insurance does not mean you will live longer. Health care does.

However, many of us believe that if we have insurance we will be covered in the event we need it. In reality, in many cities there are facilities that treat those who don’t have insurance. Treatment varies on the level of care. You walk in and have a broken arm, it can be treated to the level of your expectation.

You walk in and discover you have stage four cancer, then the treatment may not be what expect. Curative treatment options are viable when you detect something early. Having insurance is better than not having it. Regular self care is critical to maintain good health. Health insurance does not guarantee you that a doctor will see you on your schedule. A healthier lifestyle gives you the freedom to schedule your routine assessment and preventive treatment with a physician.

Why do we want to have others make decisions regarding our own health? Our lifestyle choices determine our health. Lifestyle choices include nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, smoking, alcohol, doctor visits, obesity, etc. There are other factors, but these will do for this discussion.  Healthy lifestyle choices minimize the risk of disease and should allow you a longer, healthier life.
Accidents will still happen though.

You are your best health care provider.  Make wise decisions.
