In my last blog, I mentioned my personal experience with the Atkin’s Diet and my development of acidosis as a result of poor food selections. Our blood operates in a narrow range of pH from 7.35 to 7.45. Our stomach acid has a pH of around 3.5.

If your body is constantly being fed foods high in acid content (carbohydrates, protein, fats) your blood system will hijack calcium from your bones – it actually leaches calcium from your bones to balance the pH requirement of your blood. I never know this is happening to me. Strong bones can become weak, fragile and brittle over decades of living in acidosis.  Good physical looks do not guarantee great internal health.

I found out early enough to take corrective action. Eating more foods that contain calcium or taking calcium supplements is not the answer. Foods with calcium are more bio-absorbable compared to the pill form. Calcium carbonate is the primary calcium supplement on the market and it needs to be taken with food to be absorbed. If we eat calcium-rich foods and don’t have enough magnesium in our bodies, calcium does not get to where it is needed – our bones. It ends up in the toilet.

Our blood system will sacrifice other body systems to maintain a narrow range of pH.

If we have enough magnesium (and most Americans do not), then the calcium is absorbed in the duodenum as it leaves the stomach. However, if we are deficient in vitamin D3 (and the vast majority of the United States population is), then the calcium is not absorbed into the bloodstream and ends up in the toilet. If we have enough vitamin D3, then the calcium is absorbed into the bloodstream. The journey does not end there. If you don’t have enough vitamin K2 in your body, then the calcium is deposited in your arteries and heart valves instead of your bones.
