Ivermectin is prohibited in the United States, but not in other countries.

Ivermectin is an antihelmintic drug used to kill parasites. Parasitic infections weaken immune systems and can be life-threatening, especially in countries with limited medical care.

It is widely used for livestock and not approved by the FDA for treating any viral infections.

FDA Announcement – Ivermectin & COVID-19

https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/antiviral-therapy/ivermectin/. In vitro studies of Ivermectin and COVID-10 show that this drug inhibits the host importin alpha/beta-1 nuclear transport proteins used by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The coronavirus cannot attach itself to the host cells.

No clinical trials involving humans have been performed. However, selected results of limited trials on humans can be found at https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/tables/table-2c/. The FDA wants an ‘adequately powered, well-designed, and well-conducted clinical trials to develop an opinion on the efficacy and safety of Ivermectin and COVID-19.

Headlines Today

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/fda-ivermectin-covid-mississippi/2021/08/23/id/1033382/. The FDA guidance today is that Ivermectin should not be taken to fight the pandemic virus. The Food and Drug Administration cautioned people not to take the drug Ivermectin, intended to fight parasitic worms in livestock, to treat or prevent COVID-19.

The National Institute for Health reports that ivermectin-related studies had incomplete information, significant methodological limitations, small sample sizes, and unclear study outcome measures. In addition, Mississippi Poison Control Center has been experiencing high call volumes of symptoms possibly related to human usage of an animal-approved drug – Ivermectin.

Louisiana reported people being hospitalized from self-medication with Ivermectin. As a result, the FDA insisted today that Ivermectin should not be used or considered to treat COVID-19.

India & Ivermectin

https://www.thedesertreview.com/opinion/columnists/indias-ivermectin-blackout/article_e3db8f46-f942-11eb-9eea-77d5e2519364.html. I understand the legal system in the United States to approve drugs for human consumption. However, how do you ignore the results achieved in India during their last COVID-19 surge?

India had a surge of COVID-19 from July through December 2020, with a seven-day rolling average of under 100,000 new cases and over 1,000 daily deaths. After that, new cases of COVID-19 remained static at just over 10,000 for a couple of months and daily deaths around 100.

The second surge (Delta variant) significantly overshadowed the first surge, with new cases ramping up to just under 400,000 daily by the first week of May 2021. A week or two later found the daily death rate at just under 5,000. India did not have enough vaccines to treat its citizens and changed its strategy to use anti-viral medicines.

Five weeks after treating COVID-19 patients with Ivermectin, the new case rate dropped from over 400,000 per day to around 4,000 daily. There was a corresponding 96% reduction in COVID-19 deaths. Over 60 studies with over 23,000 patients support the safety and efficacy of Ivermectin.

India Update

After the first week in August, Delhi reported 37 new cases of Delta variant and zero deaths. Tamil Nadu has 78 million and experienced nearly 2,000 new cases and 28 deaths at the same time. Tamil Nadu rejected Ivermectin and chose Remdesivir to treat its citizens.

The state of Uttar Pradesh has over 240 million people. Using Ivermectin, 19 new cases were reported, with one death during the same time as the reports from Delhi and Tamil Nadu.

An Update on the Update about India

https://www.thedesertreview.com/opinion/columnists/indias-ivermectin-blackout—part-iii-the-lesson-of-kerala/article_ccecb97e-044e-11ec-9112-2b31ae87887a.html. The history of Ivermectin use in India continues to create conundrums. Kerala is a very small state in southern India experiencing around one new case of COVID-19 per 1,000 people.

This week, Kerala reported over 22,000 new cases, with no other state in India reported close to half that amount. In addition, nearly 25% of India’s daily deaths occur in Kerala despite being three percent of India’s total population.

The state of Uttar Pradesh has not quite ten times the population of Kerala and reported 30 new cases with one death last week. So what is Kerala doing wrong? Some think it is over-reliance on vaccines and under-reliance on anti-viral medicines.

Uttar Pradesh administers Ivermectin to all contacts of those testing positive for coronavirus. The general observation by many medical authorities is that Ivermectin reduces mortality and infections – not to mention shutting down the spread of the virus.

Conclusion

It is interesting that unless you knew about India and Ivermectin, it is difficult to find anything about it. The FDA is opposed to using Ivermectin; however, the NIH leaves the choice of using Ivermectin to individual doctors. States in India using Ivermectin are seeing about 1/1000th of the deaths seen in non-Ivermectin states.

Quick treatment of any disease is critical for survival. I live in Texas. Our governor tested positive for the pandemic virus last week. A few days later, he is now testing negative. Not all of us can be tested daily, as he is, but results can be excellent when caught early.

A family member prompted me to write about Ivermectin. The virus was detected in several family members around their homes. A phone call to their doctor resulted in a prescription for Ivermectin as a prophylactic treatment to counter COVID-19. Texas
has doctors using this option.
