Make your bed first thing each morning.

Jim Rohn is credited with saying, “Things that are easy to do are also easy not to do.” He said that the difference between doing and not doing is action.

2017 is almost over. At the end of 2016, how many of us did not write our goals for 2017? Of those of us who did write our goals, how many succeeded in accomplishing a few of them?

Things are easy to do or not to do. Navy Seal Admiral William McRaven gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas in 2014. He said, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” Making your bed is easy to not do.

He said that if you make your bed first thing, you are accomplishing something to start your day. It instills pride and makes you want to do another task, and another, and another. At the end of your day, you will have accomplished many tasks.

The mere act of making your bed first thing each day reinforces the fact that little things matter. He said that if you can’t do the little things right, you can never hope to do the big things right.

One part of his speech that I chuckled at was his comment about when things go wrong. If you don’t succeed during your day, you will come home to a bed that has been made – by you. The made bed will give you that mental boost to overlook the negatives of that day and get you started to do better tomorrow. The Admiral had great advice he learned from Seal training that applies to everyday life. Go to YouTube if you want to hear his entire speech – or, just the small section on making your bed.

When you start 2018, the first thing to do is to write your goals. An unwritten goal guarantees failure for over 99% of us. Just as you have a choice each morning to make your bed or not, the difference between the unmade and the made bed is the action you take. Let’s accomplish more in 2018 by taking action to make the little things right in our lives. We can grow from those little things and gradually change our world.

Vince Poscente is a fantastic motivational speaker. I sat in wonderment listening to his life’s story about competing for a spot in the Olympics. Type ‘Vince Poscente 136 mph’ into YouTube and listen to a little bit of his story.

He will amaze you with the things he did to become an Olympic champion in just four years. We begin doing the little things in our lives and our mindset changes. There are some things that we can do to accelerate our mindset change. Vince Poscente can provide some valuable insight into what works.

Begin now making small changes in your life to make 2018 a better year for you and your family. Write down one goal, a small goal, for next year!
