Sugar is a major concern for those with diabetes.

HealthDay News reported today that 23 million American adults have diabetes. That is nearly 8% and growing annually. 21 million have type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. The body does not produce insulin to meet the body’s demand. Type 2 diabetes is not an autoimmune disease. It is thought to be caused by obesity.

Demographics show interesting percentages of who has diabetes. White adults have a higher prevalence of type 1. Black adults have the highest rate of type 2 diabetes. Overall, Blacks have 11.5%, Hispanics 9% and Whites 8% of type 2 diabetes.

Regardless of the cause and demographic distribution of those with diabetes, all can benefit from some sensible food choices. According to WebMD, the following food items are the best and the worst for people with diabetes.

Best

Whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal, baked sweet potato, fresh raw or steamed vegetables, greens, brightly colored fruits and vegetables, plant-based protein, fish, seafood, poultry, eggs, 1% or skim milk, low-fat yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, vegetable fats, plant-based oils, salmon, tuna, water, light beer, small amounts of wine, and coffee (black)

Worst

White rice/flour, white bread, French fries, canned vegetables, vegetables cooked with lots of butter, cheese or sauce, canned fruit with heavy sugar syrup, jam, jelly, fruit drinks, fried meats, pork bacon, regular cheeses, whole milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, regular ice cream, anything with trans fat, large portions of saturated fats, regular sodas, regular beer, sweetened tea, coffee with sugar and cream, and energy drinks.

Easter weekend is upon us. The Easter Bunny will be bringing lots of candy to little children (and big children – I still have my Easter basket from when I was a kid – and, it always gets filled with lots of goodies). Be wary of the sugar content of any foods you eat over the holiday, especially anything brought by the Easter Bunny.

  1. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your blog?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to
say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content
so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful
lot of text for only having 1 or two images. Maybe you could space it
    out better?

  2. Hi there! This article could not be written much better!
Looking through this article reminds me of my previous roommate!

He continually kept talking about this. I most certainly will forward this information to him.
Pretty sure he’s going to have a good read. I appreciate you for
    sharing!
