Teenagers tend to have COVID-19 symptoms about 20% of the time.

The Bruno Kessler Foundation in Trento, Italy coordinated a study assessing COVID-19 symptoms and age. As expected, young people rarely exhibit symptoms compared to older people.

Please note the differences between COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2. COVID-19 is the coronavirus disease, official name – COVID-19. The virus is named SARS-CoV-2 and stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Over 5,000 citizens of the Lombardy region of Italy were traced and found to have been in direct contact with friends, family, and other infected by SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that people under the age of 20 did not have symptoms 80% of the time. Asymptomatic COVID-19 patients can rarely pass the virus on to others. Pre-symptomatic COVID-19 patients do not have symptoms for the first several days and then exhibit one or more symptoms.

With 80% of young people asymptomatic, there is a concern for transmission of the disease, but not as much as those with symptoms at the start. Those pre-symptomatic patients can pass the virus on to others when they are not presenting any symptoms. This makes the control of COVID-19 more difficult.

Typical respiratory symptoms or fever can help quarantine and treat COVID-19 patients. However, a headache or upset stomach can be enough to indicate that you might be infected. I talked to two people recently who tested positive for COVID-19 and one only had a headache and the other had an upset stomach.

In the Italian study, over 2,800 patients were confirmed with COVID-19 and less than 900 had symptoms (31%). 81.9% of those under the age of 20 did not have COVID-19 symptoms. Those elderly over the age of 80 showed symptoms 35.4% of the time.

The group of 60 years of age and younger were unlikely to have a fever or respiratory issues 73.9% of the time. However, that group of seniors over the age of 60 had severe COVID-19 symptoms 6.6% of the time with males having a slightly higher percentage.

This study has not been peer-reviewed.
