The thyroid is the hormone of metabolism. It regulates heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones are critical for every cell in our bodies. They regulate growth and metabolism. Two important thyroid hormones are called T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is made in your pituitary and stimulates hormone production in your thyroid gland.

The functions of thyroid are to:

● Increase energy
● Increase fat burning
● Control weight
● Increase heart rate
● Increase appetite
● Stimulate bone cells to add calcium

There are many diseases affecting your thyroid. Please see your doctor if you suspect any anomaly with your thyroid. Iodine is a critical chemical for the thyroid gland. There are diseases that respond well to additional iodine. However, in some cases, excess iodine can cause problems. Restricting iodine can help reverse hypothyroidism, but is counterproductive with Hashimoto’s. Seventy-eight percent of all Hashimoto’s patients have regained normal thyroid function with iodine restriction alone.

Hashimoto’s can be made worse by certain inflammatory foods, such as:

● Tomatoes
● Peppers
● Eggplant
● Eggs
● Nuts
● Seeds
● Dairy
● Grain
● Soy
