What prevents catching something a second time?

We are seeing the occasional headline that this country or another is having a resurgence of coronavirus with people who have already had the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) says they don’t have enough information to understand what is happening. They need more data!

A person contracts coronavirus. He or she tested positive for the virus. The person gets better. The coronavirus test is now negative. Then, coronavirus symptoms appear again and there is a positive test for coronavirus. What is going on? This has not been seen in other coronaviruses. Some viruses can lay dormant. Herpes and HIV are viral infections that lay inactive and can become reactivated.

Did they reacquire the virus again? Did the virus become temporarily dormant? Did the virus leave one part of the body (lungs) and set up residence in another part of the body (intestines)? Did the test give a false negative or false positive? Did the immune system get stronger and kept the virus under control for a short time? Did the resurgence of the virus come back when the immune system faltered a bit?

It’s easy to see how many variables might explain the on-again, off-again, on-again presence of the virus. Everyone’s immune system is different, and changes based on stress, diet, sleep, age, and other factors. Is it possible to get infected a second time from a virus that you already have antibodies in your body to fight it? Probably not. That’s the purpose of antibodies to fight off an infestation of a specific viral, bacterial, or fungal agents.

The current thinking is that the virus is not dormant, but still alive and maintaining a new home in the body, most likely the intestines. Fecal matter tests conducted on some COVID-19 patients show viral RNA fragments in the stool 30-plus days after being infected. No evidence of the virus was found in respiratory samples.

Most of us have had a common cold. In many cases, it lasts a week or two and it’s gone. However, you probably know someone who couldn’t get rid of the cold symptoms after two or three weeks. The immune system could contend with it and the cold virus maintained its activity. It might even have progressed into early pneumonia.

We have some control over viruses with our immune system. Harvard Medical School tells us to not smoke, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, exercise every day, maintain a healthy weight, drink alcohol in moderation, get quality sleep, and minimize stress. Those are the things we’ve heard all our lives.

With the coronavirus, we also avoid other people – the six-foot rule, also called social distancing, wear masks, wash our hands often, and get vaccinated when the coronavirus vaccine is available. I believe the key to super health and an enhanced immune system is to ensure that you have balanced nutrition. You should not be deficient in any nutrient the body needs daily. Chronic longer-term nutrient deficiency can lead to disease.

Caloric restriction aids in the body’s ability to fight disease in general. We are told that we need 15 calories per pound of body weight to maintain weight. It turns out that 10 calories per pound of bodyweight is better to maintain weight and to fight disease.

My wife had breast cancer about six years ago. The one side effect that didn’t respond to any treatment was fatigue. She would take one or two two-hour naps daily. Radiation therapy was scheduled immediately after the chemo treatments concluded. Her radiologist told her that her fatigue would probably get worse.

On Day 1 of radiation, she started the Wahls Protocol dietary regimen (fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables, sulfur-laden vegetables, and three to four ounces of protein). Within 48 hours, she stopped taking naps. Within a week she was participating in normal activities. On the last day of radiation, we left Houston and drove to Jacksonville, Florida (1000 miles).

I rented a U-Haul to bring my mother’s estate items back to our home. She followed me, by herself, 500 miles each day, without any issues – 48 hours after her last radiation treatment. The Wahls Protocol consists of four regimens – toxin removal, exercise, diet, and stress relief.

We have been diligent about toxin removal for years. We felt that exercise was out of the question at the beginning of radiation. Diet was doable and it worked for her. Why did I choose the Wahls Protocol? Dr. Terry Wahls is a physician who came down with multiple sclerosis late in life. She studied autoimmune disease, wrote her book, The Wahls Protocol, and put herself on her own protocol. She was able to walk using a walker within three months after having spent the previous four years in a wheelchair. A month later, she could walk using a cane. Within a year, she was able to bicycle eighteen miles.

I figured that if her system could reverse years of multiple sclerosis in months, why not try it for the side effects of cancer treatment (chemo and radiation)? The dietary regimen provides balanced nutrition to over thirty key nutrients the body needs daily. I can attest that it wiped out months of chemo-fog and weeks of radiation side effects within two days.

About six years ago, the University of Southern California discovered that a 72-hour fast (water only) effectively reset the immune system. I have been doing a 72-hour fast monthly for over two years. There are many things we can do to support and enhance our immune systems. And, most of them can be done while under house arrest.

Does a person have reinfection, a resurgence, or reactivation of coronavirus when they suffer through the second round of viral symptoms? Medical scientists can’t tell us yet. In the meantime, take actions that strengthen your immune system. If under doctor’s care, consult your physician before trying an extended fast.
