Everyone knows that vigorous exercise benefits the heart. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) extends your longevity. But, did you know that some types of exercise help to grow your brain?

Exercise halts neurodegenerative diseases and stimulates neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is the creation of new brain cells. Exercise helps the brains, but some types of exercise are more beneficial.

A recent study included 100 people with mild cognitive problems. Each was assessed before, during and after the study. Different types of exercises were used. Each person improved their strength and aerobic scores. However, it was the strength exercises that also showed cognitive improvement. Why? The scientists don’t know.

Another study performed on 1300 people in midlife or older were found to have a reduced risk of cognitive decline with moderate-intensity exercise. The results showed that exercise increases blood flow to the brain. It promotes the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and new brain cells (neurogenesis).

Also found in this large study was that exercise increases the creation of crucial neurotransmitters (serotonin, acetylcholine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid). Additionally, an increase in critical brain proteins (neurotrophins) was observed.

Lack of exercise is associated with sarcopenia. It is commonly found in the elderly. Sarcopenia accelerates after forty years of age. However, not only lack of exercise but nutritional imbalance, oxidative stress, and inflammation exacerbate this condition.

The brain benefits from exercise. But, the body benefits even more. Exercise promotes healthy muscle mass, hormone growth, and maintains lean body mass and bone health.

I was on the Atkin’s Diet for six years back in the 90’s. I lost a lot of weight and felt great. I chose an option of this diet that was not nutritionally balanced. I exercised a lot but did not have the endurance I had before I started this dietary regimen. I developed acidosis and lost bone density because of my food choices.

Our bodies require balance. Our brains require balance. Choose healthy, non-toxic foods to have a healthy and enjoyable life.
