Existing pills might combat the COVID-19 virus.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for COVID-19. The Science Advances journal reported that Ebselen, an existing drug, may be effective in disrupting the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Ebselen is safe and is currently used to treat bipolar disorder and hearing loss. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. According to computer models, Ebselen attaches close enough to the primary attachment site the SARS-CoV-2 molecule uses for replication.

It interferes with the main protease (Mpro) receptor and the catalytic function and diminishes the functional expansion and transfer of data which precludes replication of the virus.

Ebeslen is one of several existing drugs that might provide interference with the virus’s ability to bind or replicate in the human body. Real-world trials will have to confirm the efficacy and effectiveness of the drug to be used to treat COVID-19. If successful, it could be repurposed and used in COVID-19 treatments.

Right now, everything is theoretical but very promising. Vaccines and new drugs take years to formulate, test, and certify for use. Existing drugs could be used in months rather than years if human studies prove the effectiveness against specific diseases.
